Abstract

In Ayurvedic medicine, Asparagus racemosus , also referred to as Shatavari, is a well-known adaptogenic herb that is very popular for its wide range of therapeutic advantages. This perennial climbing plant, which belongs to the Asparagaceae family, has long been used to treat a variety of illnesses, especially those affecting the female reproductive system, the gastrointestinal tract, and the immune system. Biologically useful components including mucilage, flavonoids, alkaloids, and steroidal saponins (particularly shatavarins) are found in the plant contributing to its wide range of pharmacological actions. Modern clinical studies support its conventional benefits by emphasizing its adaptogenic, galactagogue, immunomodulatory, anti-ulcer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory qualities. As an important adaptogenic herb, it helps the body regain physiological equilibrium by strengthening its resistance to biological, chemical, and physical stresses. Its importance in integrative medicine is supported by studies showing that it is effective in lowering anxiety and exhaustion, enhancing ability to tolerate stress, and regulating cortisol levels. Furthermore, because of its estrogenic properties, it is a mainstay of Ayurvedic gynecology, especially for the treatment of monthly irregularities, infertility, and symptoms associated with menopause. The purity and authenticity of the plant in herbal medications are guaranteed by pharmacognostic analysis, physicochemical profiling, and chromatographic fingerprints. The efficacy profile and multi-targeted outcomes of Asparagus racemosus make it superior in the growing global interest in plant-based industry. In order to support the therapeutic use of A. racemosus and open the door for its integration into modern health systems, this chapter emphasizes the significance of combining traditional knowledge with current scientific validation.
