Effects of Bioactive Compounds of Asparagus racemosus Willd. (Shatavari) on Wound and Ulcer Healing
Abstract
Wounds and ulcers are found externally and internally in various body parts (stomach, mouth, skin, etc.). Although some conventional medicines are used to treat ulcers, today, people are more interested in adopting green medicines to treat the painful sores of wounds and ulcers. Traditional medicines are becoming popular due to fewer side effects, easy availability, better effectiveness, and low cost. Therefore, various medicinal plants are used for healing wounds and ulcers. Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari) is one of them and has good anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-ulcer properties. This medicinal herb contains several bioactive compounds (flavonoids, asparagines, and saponins) and helps to treat peptic ulcers, duodenal ulcers, ulcerative colitis, and mouth ulcers. Phytoestrogens help in new cell growth in the stomach, which is essential for tissue repair and ulcer healing. The present chapter outlines the pharmaceutical characteristics of the root extract of A. racemosus , which is used for the treatment of wounds and ulcers.
