Maintenance of Aerospace Materials in Aircraft Engines
Abstract
The reliability and performance of aircraft engines are critically dependent on the integrity of aerospace materials under extreme conditions of temperature, pressure, and corrosive environments. Maintenance strategies for these materials must address thermal fatigue, oxidation, creep, erosion, corrosion, and mechanical degradation. This review highlights the types of aerospace materials used in jet engines, such as superalloys, titanium alloys, and ceramic matrix composites, and discusses the challenges they face during service. Various nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, surface treatments, coating systems, and repair methodologies are explored. The review also covers advances in predictive maintenance using digital twins and AI-based condition monitoring, which are transforming the maintenance landscape from a reactive to a proactive approach.
