A Comprehensive Blueprint for Sustainable Computing
Abstract
This chapter examines the critical intersection between data center operations and electricity grid sustainability, presenting a comprehensive analysis of how computing services can contribute to grid decarbonization. We first establish that the ICT sector's emissions, particularly from data centers, are growing at an unprecedented rate that outpaces efficiency gains. Through an examination of electricity grid operations and carbon accounting methodologies, we demonstrate why common approaches to sustainable computing may have limited real-world impact on emissions reduction. The chapter critically evaluates carbon-aware computing strategies, revealing important limitations in their effectiveness when implemented at scale. We propose a novel four-step blueprint for sustainable computing that prioritizes actions based on their verified impact on emissions reduction: (1) reducing total energy consumption through efficient resource allocation, (2) locating compute resources in regions with abundant low-carbon electricity\index{low-carbon electricity}, (3) selecting providers committed to {additional low-carbon electricity} procurement, and (4) optimizing workload scheduling to match clean electricity availability. This framework provides organizations with clear, actionable guidance for real-world emissions reduction while supporting grid decarbonization efforts.
