Abstract

This chapter explores the dynamics of team dysfunction and discusses why analyzing dysfunction is important for leading effective teams. Drawing on Patrick Lencioni&s;s model, it identifies five key dysfunctions: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. The chapter emphasizes the importance of building trust among team members, as it serves as the foundation for overcoming all other dysfunctions starting with engaging in productive conflict and fostering open communication. However, trust alone is not sufficient. Team members need to be able to engage in constructive dissent and to explore differences as well as to be accountable for their roles and actions, establishing clear priorities to create a culture of common purpose.
