Abstract

This chapter discusses the importance of foresight to aid futures thinking in understanding change and uncertainty. It emphasizes the need to develop scenario planning to consider plausible futures, acknowledging the complexity of change and the dynamic nature of uncertainty. The chapter outlines the steps taken to conduct a pre-mortem as a means of reassessing current plans. It also draws on the need to develop a mindset of forecasting. The chapter concludes with a tool to support forecasting. The tool encourages embracing things that don&s;t fit existing patterns and looking for inflection points in change trajectories. It also advises caution in making predictions during turbulent times and advocates for a double-interval approach when looking for historical parallels. By focusing on patterns rather than just events, practitioners can better navigate future scenarios and enhance their forecasting abilities.
