Abstract

Effective decision-making in complex, dynamic environments requires leaders to embody an “ethics of care”, fostering empathetic attunement to people&s;s emotional needs. This approach, rooted in relational leadership, enables leaders to navigate intricate ethical dilemmas with integrity, fairness, and empathy. Mindful listening underpins ethical decision-making and involves four levels: Downloading, Factual, Empathic, and Generative. However, internal “enemies of listening” (Voice of Judgment, Cynicism, and Fear) can hinder the process of mindful listening. Overcoming these enemies through self-awareness, intentional effort, and practice is essential. By doing so, leaders can create a culture of trust, collaboration, and informed decision-making, ultimately upholding the diverse perspectives and ethical implications of their choices, particularly in crisis situations where foundational value systems are challenged. This supports leaders acting with moral values, trust, and integrity.
