Abstract

Leadership in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments demands unique skills. As complexity increases, leaders must navigate intricate situations with self-awareness, a learning mindset, and contextual understanding. Leaders must balance paradoxical tensions, such as being both expert and learner, and being directive and a listener. Intellectual humility underpins leadership in VUCA, involving empathy, recognition of unknowns, and seeking others&s; input. However, leaders can also get caught in some common mind traps. These include being trapped by simple stories, one&s;s own rightness, and the desire for agreement, and must be overcome through strategies like sense-making, articulating uncertainty, and embracing multiple perspectives. By acknowledging and addressing these challenges, leaders can foster more adaptive, collaborative, and resilient strategies, ultimately leading to better outcomes under VUCA conditions.
