Toxicological Safety and Risk Analysis
Abstract
This chapter introduces the reader to the general principles and structure of toxicological safety assessment of xenobiotics (hazard identification, exposure assessment, demonstration of dose-response relationship, risk characterization). The concepts of therapeutic index (TI), margin of safety (MOS), generally regarded as safe (GRAS), principle of three Rs are explained. Risk-benefit analysis is also included and exemplified by fish and selenium.
