Abstract

Rock-paper-scissors is a game with simple rules, but to play at a high skill level necessitates complex reasoning. Winning requires a player to observe their opponents and identify any patterns in their play. Being able to predict their next play with better than random probability means winning more money. But as you work on developing a strategy to win, your opponents are also doing the same thing. You need to understand what your opponent will do, knowing that your opponent is also adapting their play to match their expectations of your strategy. It can get complex! Of interest is that there is a strategy which guarantees you will never lose – or win – in the long run. If all your moves are randomly chosen, then there are no patterns in your play to be exploited.
