In late 2022, ChatGPT burst onto the world stage – and the world will never be the same. Behind the program’s impressive ability to “chat” in a human-like way is a technology called a large Language Model, or an LLM. This chapter explains how an LLM works. If you weren’t already convinced that Artificial Intelligence is really Superficial Intelligence, then you’ll have no doubts after reading this chapter! ChatGPT, and all the other chatbots on the market, do a great job of creating the illusion of intelligence. There is no intelligence, as repeatedly demonstrated by the media who enjoy pointing out the silly errors (“hallucinations”) that these programs make – and the consequences to the humans who blindly trust that the AI is correct.
