Abstract

This chapter aims to provide an understanding of the physical principles that underpin the design and operation of modern aircraft and their associated systems. It not only provides all the physical principles needed for those following National Engineering Programmes at level III but also acts as a suitable foundation for those wishing to embark on a higher education qualification associated with Aerospace Engineering. This chapter starts with further detailed coverage of the units of measure with emphasis being placed on the SI, English/US units, after which a section on the fundamental physical principles that underpin the main subject matter of the chapter is provided. This is followed by sections that include in-depth coverage on the nature of matter and elementary mechanics where elements of statics, kinematics, dynamics and fluid dynamics will be considered with emphasis on the application of these subjects to aircraft structures and systems. Also, the rudiments of thermodynamics, light and sound are covered, again with their aircraft applications being emphasized.
