Cardiomyopathies in older persons
Abstract
This chapter focuses on the nonischemic causes of cardiomyopathy encountered commonly in older persons. The various presenting features as well as prevalence of the various types of nonischemic cardiomyopathies in older patients differ in several respects from those of younger patients. Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, restrictive cardiomyopathy with attention to cardiac amyloidosis, dilated cardiomyopathy, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, with or without obstruction to outflow, are reviewed with emphasis placed on the unique pathophysiology, morphology, presentation, and treatment of these entities in this age group.
