Abstract

Older patients with DVT require lower doses of warfarin than younger patients because of potential drug interactions and increased bleeding risk. Newer direct oral anticoagulants such as apixaban and rivaroxaban are preferred for older patients with DVT as they may require less monitoring compared with warfarin. Wearing compression stockings can help reduce swelling and improve lower extremity blood flow, which is especially important for older patients with reduced mobility. It is important to treat underlying medical conditions that could contribute to DVT.
