Abstract

Point-of-care diagnostics have been revolutionized by technological advancements in optical probes with exceptional performances and have paved the way to take the healthcare sector to the next level. They play crucial roles in minimizing the economic burden of developing countries, especially for disease management through their low-cost and time-effective portable devices for self-diagnosis. On the other hand, for the development of non-invasive diagnostic probes, biomarkers serve as the key elements. This chapter discusses the developments made in the field of diagnostic optical probes, their transduction mechanism, and limitations, including sensitivity, selectivity, and specificity. The possibilities of using these probes for miniaturised sensor devices for point-of-care diagnostics are also discussed.
