Sustainable materials for photovoltaic systems
Abstract
The rapid advancement of photovoltaic technology has been a pivotal driver in the global shift towards renewable energy sources, with solar power becoming an increasingly viable and cost-effective alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based electricity generation. As the demand for solar energy continues to surge, the photovoltaic industry faces the challenge of developing sustainable materials and manufacturing processes to support this growth while minimizing environmental impact. Sustainable materials for photovoltaic (PV) systems are key to making solar energy greener and more efficient. These materials not only contribute to energy production but also minimize environmental impact across the lifecycle of the solar panels—from manufacturing to disposal. Some of the most promising sustainable materials for photovoltaic systems include Perovskite solar cells, organic photovoltaics (OPVs), copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin film, cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin film, silicon-based solar cells (next-generation), recycled and eco-friendly encapsulants, and bio-sourced photovoltaics. The novel development approach for sustainable and effective materials in photovoltaic systems offers several advantages, including efficient land utilization, reduced shading and reflective losses, and potential co-benefits like water conservation and aquaculture integration. The design of photovoltaic systems, however, presents unique challenges that must be addressed to ensure long-term durability and performance. The harsh dynamics of water environments, such as waves, storms, and fluctuating water levels, can pose significant risks to the structural integrity and electrical components of the PV system.
