Environmental life cycle analysis of renewable energy
Abstract
The growing global energy demand and its associated environmental impacts have heightened the need for a sustainable and green energy transition. Renewable energy systems have been increasingly favored over the past decade for their economic, environmental, and technical advantages. However, despite their benefits, renewable energy technologies also have environmental consequences that must be addressed. Life-cycle analysis (LCA) plays a critical role in evaluating the sustainability and long-term environmental impacts of these systems, helping to mitigate potential harm. Therefore, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the LCA process, detailing its importance in assessing the environmental footprint of renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, biomass, hydropower, and geothermal energy. This chapter also presents a comparative analysis of key metrics, including carbon emissions and ecosystem disruption, revealing the environmental trade-offs involved in deploying different renewable technologies. In addition, this chapter explores solutions to reduce environmental impacts through strategies like material efficiency, green manufacturing, recycling, and advancements in technology. The discussion extends to future trends, emphasizing the need for LCA-driven policies that support a truly sustainable energy transition. By offering a detailed exploration of LCA for renewable energy, this chapter provides critical insights into balancing the growing demand for clean energy with the need to minimize environmental impacts, fostering a more sustainable future.
