Abstract

The intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and microcredentialing is transforming lifelong learning by offering personalized, flexible, and industry-aligned educational pathways. This chapter explores how AI enhances microcredentials – short, targeted certifications – through adaptive learning, scalability, and skill gap analysis, improving employability and learner outcomes. It examines benefits like faster skill acquisition and inclusivity, alongside challenges including the digital divide, data privacy, and academic integrity. With critical analysis revealing socio-economic barriers and ethical concerns, this chapter suggests the FRAME-EQ ethical framework – rooted in fairness, responsibility, accessibility, monitoring, explainability, and empathy – to ensure trustworthy, inclusive learning. Future directions propose blending microcredentials with degrees, forging bold partnerships, deepening research, and creating an AI-Human harmony. The chapter advocates for equitable, learner-centric AI-driven microcredentialing to empower a global workforce, emphasizing ethical frameworks and infrastructure investment.
