Abstract

The rapid spread of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies has triggered an unprecedented transformation in education. This chapter comprehensively examines the multidimensional impact of GenAI on education. Starting from the basic concepts and historical context of GenAI, the chapter discusses its new approaches to learning and teaching (personalized learning, multimodal models, AI-enabled robots, teacher efficiency) and its potential and challenges in assessment/feedback processes (automated assessment, feedback quality, academic integrity). It also outlines critical ethical and social issues raised by the integration of these technologies (privacy, algorithmic and societal biases, equity and the digital divide, environmental impact, and the role of human interaction). In addition, the future of GenAI in education and key policy/practice principles for its responsible adoption are briefly addressed. Finally, it is emphasized that GenAI offers significant opportunities, but that realizing this potential depends on overcoming ethical dilemmas, inequality risks, and implementation challenges, building AI literacy and adopting human-centered, balanced, and collaborative approaches.
