Abstract

The increasing global demand for renewable energy has positioned wind energy as a cornerstone of sustainable development. However, optimizing wind energy systems poses significant challenges due to the variability of wind conditions, system complexities, and the need for efficient integration into power grids. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative solution, offering innovative strategies to enhance the control and optimization of wind energy systems. This chapter explores AI-based control strategies for wind energy optimization, focusing on their application to improve wind turbine performance, increase energy output, and ensure system reliability. Key AI techniques such as machine learning, neural networks, fuzzy logic, and reinforcement learning are discussed in the context of wind turbine control, monitoring, and fault diagnosis. These methods enable predictive maintenance, adaptive control, and real-time optimization, addressing critical challenges like wind variability and component wear. Furthermore, the chapter highlights hybrid AI models that combine multiple AI approaches for enhanced decision-making and control. Case studies and real-world implementations demonstrate the effectiveness of AI in optimizing wind farm operations, from load balancing to grid integration. While AI offers significant potential, the chapter also examines limitations, including computational demands, data availability, and ethical concerns. By leveraging AI-based control strategies, wind energy systems can achieve higher efficiency, reduced downtime, and better integration with renewable energy networks. This chapter provides insights into the state-of-the-art applications of AI in wind energy and outlines future research directions to address existing challenges and unlock the full potential of this transformative technology.
