Contribution to Advanced Control Approaches for a DFIG-Based Wind Turbine
Abstract
Recent studies have introduced advanced controllers to improve energy quality and ensure stable wind system operation by addressing system nonlinearities. While most research evaluates these control methods individually, the work in this chapter extends the investigation by developing control algorithms and applying them to the same Wind Turbine Aerodynamic Model (WTAM) based on Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). The focus is on the Backstepping-based controller and Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) approach, assessing their dynamic and steady-state performances, as well as their robustness against wind speed variations. The efficacy of these control strategies in optimizing power production and ensuring system stability is confirmed by simulation results obtained, proving the superiority of the nonlinear control algorithms compared to the traditional proportional-integral (PI) method. Both ADRC and Backstepping techniques proved their high performance in reference tracking during steady state and respond swiftly to transient events.
