Robotic process automation in the medical field
Abstract
Robotic process automation (RPA) is yet another innovative technology in the sector driven by trends in current computing power, smart devices, and communication engineering. The medical field involves many twisted procedures and complex data management, and it is greatly benefited from RPA for its method of use in automating tedious and often erroneous procedures and, in general, enhancing efficiency. This chapter examines the application of RPA in healthcare, more specifically in the administration of healthcare documentation and patient data. AI and ML work with RPA for simplification; RPA only automates, but does not introduce the intelligent processing to the solution of healthcare problems of decision-making in treatment planning. Smart wears and IoMT devices enable real-time streaming of data into various systems, which in turn feed critical information to auto-metering for processing at high speeds and response. Furthermore, the development of know how in communication technology, such as the 5G, implies that the data transmission is made to be smooth; hence, the feedback of doctors and/or other healthcare professionals to the systems is enhanced. This chapter also describes some of the pain points in implementing RPA in the medical field, including data security and integration issues and the future trends that will shape the extent to which RPA can transform and revolutionize the field in the future, especially as advanced computing and communication technologies are considered.
