Unraveling the Prospects of Epigenetic Memory
Abstract
Climate change is driving an increase in abiotic stress, including drought, salinity, extreme temperature fluctuations and heightened UV radiation, all of which significantly jeopardize global food security by constraining crop yield. Although traditional breeding methodologies and genetic engineering have enhanced plant resilience to these environmental stresses, recent research emphasizes the pivotal role of epigenetic memory in facilitating plant adaptation. Epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation, histone modifications and the action of small RNAs enable plants to “retain” information from prior stress encounters, resulting in improved tolerance and faster responses to repeated stressors. This chapter delves into the molecular mechanisms underlying epigenetic memory, which can be categorized into somatic, intergenerational and transgenerational inheritance, and highlights how these mechanisms modulate the expression of stress-responsive genes. We have investigated the impact of chromatin remodeling, the presence of histone variants and the influence of transposable elements on the adaptation of plants to abiotic stresses, as well as their role in precisely regulating gene expression. Furthermore, we have discussed innovative strategies such as chemical priming, stress pre-conditioning and epigenome editing, which hold promise for harnessing stress memory in sustainable crop enhancement. Despite the significant potential of epigenetic modifications, challenges persist regarding the stability and heritability of these epigenetic footprints under field conditions. Therefore, understanding these dynamic regulatory processes could revolutionize the development of stress-resilient crops, offering a critical advantage in navigating climate-induced environmental uncertainties. By integrating epigenetic insights into contemporary agricultural practices, this chapter underscores a transformative shift towards more efficient, sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural systems.
