Abstract

This study examines the use of Midjourney, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) text-to-image generator, in augmenting fashion design processes. Midjourney translates textual descriptions into visual representations, providing a unique tool for design ideation and visualization. The research aimed to assess Midjourney’s effectiveness in creating mood, fabric, and color boards, and its role in facilitating clothing design, especially for students with limited technical skills in traditional fashion design. Employing Midjourney extensively, the methodology focused on its capability to accurately render textures and details, and the learning process involved in mastering prompt writing. Generating numerous iterations was pivotal to achieving precise design outputs. Key findings highlight Midjourney’s proficiency in detailed and textured visualizations, enhancing the creative design process. Its use in educational settings proved especially beneficial, offering students an alternative, accessible platform for expressing design ideas, thereby reducing barriers related to skill deficiencies and financial constraints. In industry contexts, Midjourney demonstrated potential to streamline design team workflows, significantly reducing time and material waste in sample garment development. This aspect suggests a positive environmental impact and heightened cost efficiency, marking a substantial advancement in digital innovation within the fashion industry.
