Abstract

Wetlands, including s and reservoirs, are crucial in maintaining water quality and ecosystem services. However, these systems face numerous threats due to anthropogenic activities, climate change, and land use alterations. In this chapter, we made a comprehensive approach for estimating the water quality and its geospatial variations using Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within a wetland system framework. The integration of RS and GIS enables the monitoring of water quality parameters, such as pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, and turbidity, along with predominant cations and anions at varying spatial and temporal scales. This study of the Ashtamudi Wetland System, a Ramsar wetland site in India, demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach in identifying areas of high water quality degradation and predicting the impact of environmental degradation factors on water quality; and provides valuable insights for sustainable land and water management practices. It emphasizes the importance of integrating RS and GIS in wetland management approach to ensure its ecosystem services and thereby enhancing the quality of living standards of the people.
