Application of Remote Sensing and GIS for the Study of Climate Change on Glacier Retreat
Abstract
Glaciers are one of the most significant elements responsible for balancing the water on the Earth, but due to global climate change, the glaciers are undergoing crucial changes. The increase in the global temperature has impelled most of the glaciers across the globe to retreat, which in turn can cause an abnormal rise in the water level of water bodies, as well as lead to formation of numerous glacial lakes, which may generate problems of glacial lake outbursts. This spotlights the obligations to expand the studies on worldwide glacier changes and gauge the rate of their changes. These changes in the glacier are intricate when measured with a physical mode of data collection. Still, since the introduction of remote sensing in this field, studies have increased due to the availability of data from various satellites. With this view, the present research proposes the significance of remote sensing in advancing glaciological studies and the multiple sensors used globally in the area. The study also highlights various glacier mass balance approaches and the work done in this context in numerous parts of the world.
