Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are a promising solution in promoting carbon neutrality by withstanding climate crisis and providing environmental justice. The challenge is to address the cutting edge of battery technology and battery management systems (BMS,), which lies with the future technologies and breakthrough opportunities in battery materials for advancing electric mobility. The worldwide need for battery materials is growing significantly and is expected to continue for several years. Other factors such as recycling and second use will also affect the demand for materials in BMSs. To address these challenges, materials have evolved as a vital factor in storing electrochemical energy from ultra-capacitors to high specific energy batteries to fuel cells. Over time, battery materials have evolved and dominated the market, starting with lead–acid (mature technology, cheaper), Ni batteries (higher specific energy), lithium batteries (energy density, high specific energy), metal/air batteries (high specific energy, energy density), and flow batteries which are like fuel cells using different materials. The technological aspects of materials need to be explored for high energy storage. Zinc manganese oxide, nanobolt lithium tungsten, gold nanowire, gel electrolyte, organosilicon electrolyte, tank two-string cell batteries, and lithium-sulfur batteries are promising solutions as they are fast charging, affordable, and nontoxic.
