Abstract

Battery management systems (BMSs) are essential for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and longevity of energy storage in electric vehicles (EVs). As the demand for sustainable transportation grows, advancements in battery technologies like lithium-ion, solid-state, lithium-sulfur, and sodium-ion are driving innovation. However, challenges remain in thermal management, charge/discharge cycles, and battery safety. Emerging materials, such as solid electrolytes, high-thermal conductivity materials, advanced anodes and cathodes, nanomaterials, and phase-change materials (PCMs), offer promising solutions to enhance BMS performance. Integrating these materials with innovations in sensor technology, power electronics, and battery health monitoring can improve thermal and chemical precision. Sustainability is a key focus, with emerging materials potentially enabling easier battery recycling and reducing environmental impacts. However, challenges like scalability, cost-effectiveness, and standardization must be addressed. Future opportunities lie in hybrid materials and advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning, which could revolutionize BMS capabilities. These advancements promise safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly energy storage solutions, shaping the next generation of EV batteries. This review highlights the intersection of materials science and BMS, offering insights into future trends that will drive the evolution of electric vehicle technologies.
