Effect of Sustainable Materials to Combat Friction and Wear Behavior in EV and HEV Components using Advanced Surface-Processing Techniques
Abstract
The global increase in the usage of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) necessitates the use of eco-friendly and efficient materials in tribological components. Parts most exposed to friction include bearings, gears, and brake systems, which thus need to be made from materials that can withstand high wear and tear common in EVs and HEVs. This chapter also discusses environmentally friendly materials for these parts, including biodegradable polymers, recycled metals, self-lubricating materials, and anti-wear coatings including thermal spray coatings (TSCs). These materials not only increase key performance characteristics of the components, but also can help achieve environmentally friendly objectives and minimize both the carbon footprint and recyclability. This chapter also focuses on how these materials enable designers to achieve lighter, more efficient forms and considers developments in sustainable tribology that underpin the automotive industry’s move toward cleaner energy. Studies indicate that green friction materials are crucial in enhancing EV and HEV performance by conforming to the automotive manufacturing sustainability guidelines.
