Abstract

The rising need for sustainable and biodegradable alternatives to traditional plastic packaging has spurred interest in innovative materials, including insect protein–based edible films. This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of the properties, production techniques, applications, and challenges associated with insect protein-based films. It begins with an analysis of the film-forming potential of proteins derived from various insect species, highlighting their inherent strength, flexibility, and biodegradability. Comparative studies of insect proteins with conventional biopolymers are discussed, emphasizing the unique properties that make them suitable for eco-friendly packaging solutions. The chapter also investigates the applications of insect protein–based films in the food industry, focusing on their barrier properties, including moisture and oxygen resistance, which contribute to the extended shelf life of food products. The suitability of these films for diverse food types and their potential to address environmental concerns by reducing plastic waste are explored in detail. The production processes, from protein extraction and purification to film fabrication, are thoroughly examined, with attention to scalability and technological challenges. Moreover, the chapter addresses regulatory and consumer acceptance issues, which remain key obstacles to the commercial success of insect protein–based films. Discussions include global food safety regulations, labeling requirements, and strategies to improve public perception through education and awareness campaigns. By presenting case studies and emerging innovations, the chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current advancements and future potential of insect protein-based films. Ultimately, this work highlights how these films can play a critical role in the transition to sustainable food packaging systems, contributing to broader efforts in environmental conservation and waste reduction.
