Two Outstanding Problems
Abstract
A metapopulation structure, with local extinction and recolonization, allows population-level properties to be selected. Conflicts between selection at the individual-level selection and the population level arise through many mechanisms, including competition, predation, cooperation, exploitation and migration. In this note, we argue that local extinction and recolonization is likely major evolutionary forces that deserve closer examination, both theoretically and, most importantly, experimentally.
