Abstract

This chapter examines how professions can actively design and execute digital transformation strategy, moving beyond broad aspirations to focus on concrete strategies for change at different levels and by different actors. It outlines ten of the most common approaches professions are currently deploying, from system-wide reskilling initiatives to emerging technology credentialing; and it explains how these strategies build the digital capacity, resilience, and legitimacy of professions. The chapter explains the critical role of diverse actors, including practitioners, professional leaders, policymakers, and technology providers, whose coordinated decisions and collaborations shape transformation outcomes. It also introduces tools for assessing progress, such as performance metrics, maturity models, and trust indicators, which help determine whether transformation efforts are achieving their intended goals. Readers will gain a strategic framework for forming, evaluating, selecting, and executing profession-level digital transformation strategies, along with guiding principles for building future-ready professions that will continue to deliver essential value in an increasingly digital society.
