Abstract

This chapter examines how digital disruption and transformation are reshaping the accounting profession, long trusted as the steward of financial information and accountability. Emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, robotic process automation, big data analytics, and cloud computing, are shifting accountants’ roles from transactional processing and static information provision toward strategic advisory, data-driven decision-making, and ethical oversight of complex digital systems. Drawing on empirical studies, policy initiatives, and global best practices, the chapter evaluates the current state of accounting&s;s digital transformation, highlighting progress, barriers, and risks of inaction. It considers how professional bodies, educators, and practitioners can respond by building digital capabilities, fostering innovation, and embedding ethical responsibility. Readers will gain insight into the opportunities and challenges facing accounting in a digital tech-rich future, and why purposeful adaptation is critical to sustaining the profession&s;s societal relevance, technical credibility, and strategic value into the future.
