Abstract

This introductory chapter establishes why the digital transformation of professions can no longer be viewed as optional or peripheral. Once defined by stability, legitimacy, and expertise, professions are now being reshaped by accelerating technological, economic, and social change. Yet discussions of digital disruption remain fragmented and jargon-heavy, leaving many responses reactive and incomplete. This chapter positions the book as a practical and research-informed roadmap that clarifies what digital transformation really means for professional practice, education, and governance; as well as how to effectively undertake it. The chapter unpacks the book&s;s approach to synthesizing insights from academic scholarship, practitioner reports, professional body literatures, and profession-specific case studies. Readers will come away with a strong foundation for understanding the stakes of digital transformation and why the rest of the book is essential for effectively navigating and shaping the future of professional work.
