Abstract

This chapter explores the evolution of professions and the forces that have shaped their development over time. From ancient roles built on specialized knowledge to modern regulated occupations, professions have continually adapted to changing social, economic, and technological contexts. Historical turning points such as the Industrial Revolution and successive technological advances reveal both the resilience and vulnerability of professional models. Today, globalization, digital disruption, and eroding public trust are intensifying the pressure for reform while creating opportunities for reinvention. The chapter shows that understanding how professions have responded to past challenges provides valuable insight into how they might confront today&s;s disruption. Readers will gain an appreciation of the professions’ capacity for adaptation and renewal, and why this long historical perspective is essential for anticipating the risks and opportunities of the digital era.
