Abstract

This chapter investigates digital disruption as a phenomenon that is redefining how organizations, industries, institutions, and societies function, and sets the stage for understanding its impact on the professions. Digital disruption arises when advances in technologies interrupt established routines, processes, and competitive dynamics, forcing adaptation or decline. From Uber&s;s transformation of the taxi industry to social media&s;s reshaping of human connection, disruption alters expectations, market structures, and operational practices. The chapter unpacks how technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and cloud computing enable new entrants to displace incumbents, establish new forms of value, and create entirely different competitive landscapes. Readers will gain insight into the causes, dynamics, and effects of digital disruption, and why grasping these forces is critical for understanding the transformation pressures now confronting the professions.
