The Digital Transformation of Professions
Abstract
This chapter explores digital transformation as a fundamental reimagining of how professions create and deliver value in a digitally mediated world. Unlike digitization or automation, digital transformation entails strategic and comprehensive changes to roles, processes, governance, ethics, and relationships with society. The chapter explains how digital disruption and digital transformation differ in scope, dynamics, and impacts, and why understanding their inter-relationships and interactions is critical for professions seeking to navigate both effectively. It explains how transformation at the institutional level reshapes professional education, regulatory frameworks, and the social contract, while at the individual level it requires professionals to acquire new digital competencies, adopt innovative tools, and adopt their value proposition. Readers will gain insight into the aims of professional digital transformation and the multiple levels at which it unfolds. This provides an essential foundation for understanding how professions can sustain trust, legitimacy, and relevance in an increasingly digital future
