Abstract

Drug penetration into the eye is influenced by many factors, including characteristics of the drug administered (e.g. lipophilicity versus hydrophilicity), route of drug administration, frequency of dosing, degree of ocular inflammation, and surgical status of the eye. Types of drug formulations include drops, ointments, and injections, both commercial and produced “in-house” in the pharmacy department. All these factors are reviewed for their influence on drug penetration into the eye and also on their removal out of the eye.
