Transforming Agriculture
Abstract
Agriculture is one of humanity's oldest and indispensable endeavors, crafted to sustain life on the planet's crust by meeting our fundamental requirements, notably food. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the Green Revolution's innovations—chemical fertilizers, pesticides, GM crops, and advanced irrigation—boosted food security for a growing global population. However, now-a-days, rising population, limited land, dwindling water, climate change, pollution, soil salinity, and pest resistance are severely impacting global food production, security, and sustainability. To address these challenges, it has become crucial to implement innovative next-generation technologies such as agroforestry, hydroponics, nanotechnology, remote sensing, and other cutting-edge technologies. These advancements will make farming more eco-friendly, sustainable, and secure. Additionally, the effective incorporation of these promising technologies contributes to addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the second priority of eliminating hunger. This integration may also aid in reaching the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) projection of a 70% increase in agricultural production to satisfy the nutritional needs of the burgeoning populace by 2050. This chapter will primarily concentrate on examining the contribution of the aforementioned advanced technologies in achieving food security through agricultural transformation or revolution, as well as in fostering sustainable agriculture.
