Abstract

This chapter is dedicated to the evaluation of the commitment of logistics companies operating in countries that belong to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the context of digitalization. The commitment is assessed by finding references to sustainability in the mission and vision statements of the sampled companies, as well as by mapping the full set of strategic-level statements to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The sample includes 100 logistics companies operating in the ASEAN region and 60 companies operating in the GCC countries. The identified level of commitment can be characterized as comparatively satisfactory for both regions. Logistics companies of the ASEAN region demonstrated closer alignment with SDG12 and SDG13, while logistics companies operating in the GCC region didn't show explicit preferences and showed alignment to a wider set of SDGs—SDG6–8 and SDG12–13. For ASEAN and GCC, respectively, 33% and 18.5% of logistics companies align their strategic-level statements with at least one SDG. Further research is possible by extending the compared regions, using similar methodology in application to another industry, or by observing time dynamics.
