Abstract

This chapter examines the critical role that sustainable innovation plays in developing a sustainable blue economy (SBE), with a focus on both opportunities and challenges. The “blue economy,” or ocean-based economic activity, has emerged as a key driver of sustainable development, particularly in the fight against climate change and the maintenance of marine biological balance. The chapter examines how sustainable innovation may hasten the shift to a more SBE while tackling environmental, social, and economic issues via a thorough review of prior research and case studies. The study finds promising prospects in fields including marine biotechnology, ocean cleaning technologies, aquaculture innovations, and renewable energy sources. It also highlights significant challenges including financial and social constraints and regulatory barriers. To better understand how sustainable innovation is incorporated into the blue economy, a conceptual framework that emphasizes the interplay between internal and external variables that drive innovation is constructed. The research concludes that while there is great potential for sustainable development in the blue economy, its success depends on the effective implementation of innovative concepts, supportive legislative frameworks, and collaborative stakeholder approaches.
