Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to explore the role of quality assurance (QA) practices in fostering sustainable higher education in Oman. Using a qualitative study in the Omani context, the chapter focuses on international, regional, and national frameworks influencing QA mechanisms, particularly in Omani higher education institutions (HEIs). Oman Authority for Academic Accreditation and Quality Assurance of Education (OAAAQA)-led QA practices enhance the credibility of institutions, teaching effectiveness, and alignment with global benchmarks. Based on a review of recent literature (2018–2023), a thematic analysis was conducted to identify key impacts of the program, such as the improvement of educational standards, the enhancement of faculty development, and improved global competitiveness. Despite these achievements, HEIs continue to face challenges, such as limited resources, regulatory complexity, and a reluctance to embrace change, despite achievements. To overcome these challenges, the study advocates for enhancement of QA practices by integrating innovation, technology, and international collaboration. It highlights the potential of QA systems to support sustainable development goals (SDGs) through responsible research, strategic partnerships, and inclusive education. In summary, this chapter positions QA as a transformative tool to strengthen institutional performance and global competitiveness in pursuit of Oman Vision 2040.
