Abstract

This chapter brings out an in-depth discussion of artificial intelligence (AI) and remote sensing technologies as new technologies capable of resolving the global issues of the environment. It talks about applying the use of machine learning (ML) techniques in the optimization of sustainable practices in various sectors, including agriculture, climate monitoring, water resource management, biodiversity conservation, and urban environment planning. Although the conventional approach to environmental management, for example, crop rotation in the agricultural sector, has been the foundation of such management, it has mostly been restricted to complexity, adaptability, and responsiveness to dynamic environmental conditions. The use of AI is brought to the fore in this review as it offers a paradigm shift of data-driven, adaptive, and scalable solutions to the environment through the application of large data sets using remote sensing, IoT sensors, and historical accounts. The chapter covers such significant ML models as supervised learning algorithms (e.g., XGBoost, Random Forest), deep learning architecture (e.g., CNNs, LSTMs), reinforcement learning on digital twins, and the ways they can be used in predictive modeling, resource management, and climate resilience. Generative AI with regard to the creation of high-fidelity simulation and prediction of an environmental situation is also discussed. Quantitative evidence from different studies shows significant improvements in the accuracy of environmental monitoring, resource efficiency, and reduction of ecological degradation. Furthermore, the chapter explores case studies of AI in the environment that are based on real-world executions. Although the transformative power is a significant consideration, the existing challenges, such as high initial investment costs, data quality, technical skills, and ethical conduct, are of concern. Future research directions are later covered, with potential directions being multi-modal AI, Explainable AI (XAI), federated learning, and developing user-friendly and fair solutions for the achievement of global environmental sustainability.
