Developing a Sustainable Food Production Synergy with Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, and Digital Twins
Abstract
Agriculture is essential to the survival of humans as the main source of food, along with other necessities. However, the agricultural sector is hindered by global warming and other hazards to the environment, and it is projected that between 720 and 811 million people experienced food insecurity. Contemporary agriculture, as well as the surveillance and tracking of systems, faced significant challenges and obstacles. Current agricultural practices tend to put profitability and efficiency ahead of environmental preservation and sustainable development in the future. Significant structural and technological improvements are needed to create sustainable agriculture/agricultural (SA) that can feed the world's rapidly growing population. However, by utilizing and developing smart and transformative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins (DTs), and the Internet of Things (IoT), as well as machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) in agricultural operations, these challenges can be addressed. Smart and transformative technologies are supposed to help achieve the “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” in a number of areas, especially when it comes to integrating renewable energy. Smart and transformative technologies are expected to integrate, install, and retrofit automatic instruments and equipment to revitalize both new and current agricultural domains. Hence, some of the most innovative and promising uses of smart and transformative technologies in the agriculture sector (sustainable food production) are highlighted in this chapter. Additionally, the importance and synergy of smart and transformative technologies in precision agriculture (PA) and the shift to sustainability are discussed.
