Abstract

In the previous chapters, we studied the vibrations of continuous elastic structural members. Here, we consider structures consisting of discrete identical rigid segments connected end to end by frictionless hinges with elastic rotational springs. Applications include robot arms, collapsible space structures, tank treads, and steel frames with semi-rigid joints. When the number of links N tends to infinity, these linked segmented structures tend to their continuous structure counterparts. In actual applications and due to restrictions of exact solutions, N is usually finite and small.
