Abstract

The growing demand for sustainable and effective wastewater treatment technologies has spurred significant advancements in adsorption-based methods. This review explores recent innovations in adsorption techniques for liquid waste treatment, focusing on the development of advanced materials, underlying mechanisms, and practical applications. A comprehensive overview of adsorbent types, including activated carbons (ACs), metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), biopolymers, and nanocomposites, is presented, highlighting their structural features, surface functionalities, and modification strategies that enhance adsorption performance. The mechanisms governing contaminant removal, such as electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, and π–π interactions, are analyzed in relation to the physicochemical properties of both the adsorbent and the pollutants. Key applications are discussed across diverse sectors, including industrial effluents, dye-laden wastewater, and heavy metal remediation. Real-world case studies demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of innovative adsorbents in field conditions. Despite notable progress, challenges remain in terms of regeneration, cost-efficiency, and environmental footprint. This review also outlines future directions, including the integration of adsorption with hybrid technologies and the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven material design. Emphasis is placed on the environmental and economic implications of adopting next-generation adsorbents, underlining their potential to transform conventional wastewater treatment practices.
