Abstract

Nature’s ability to create structures and self-organize at molecular levels has been used by scientists as an inspiration for advances in controlled polymerization techniques. Polymersomes (PMs) are artificial and versatile vesicles made from amphiphilic synthetic block copolymers that offer superior stability and customization comparatively to traditional liposomes. These advanced vesicles are very promising in numerous biomedical fields, such as medical imaging, drug delivery, and diagnostics. PMs can incorporate hydrophobic and/or hydrophilic drugs, and their membranes can be engineered to respond to some environmental stimuli, such as temperature, pH, and light, allowing responsive delivery systems. Advances in polymers chemistry have enabled the design of multifunctional PMs with specific targeting ligands and stimulus-responsive capabilities. This chapter will focus on the structure, methods of preparation, characterization techniques, and emerging applications of PMs, highlighting their role in the advancement of nanomedicine and drug delivery.
