Abstract

The use of liposomes as drug delivery vehicles has become increasingly popular, especially in cancer treatment. Over the past few years, various systems have been developed to deliver drugs that are controlled and targeted within cells in response to specific stimuli. Redox-responsive systems have the advantage of remaining steady in circulation while responding to elevated glutathione (GSH) levels within the cells. Liposomes rapidly release their encapsulated therapeutic payload when they reach tumor tissues or specific target cells due to the high GSH concentrations in those regions. In addition to increasing the concentration of therapeutic payload within cells, these redox-sensitive systems also reduce side effects and minimize toxicity associated with conventional drugs.
