Abstract

Steel slag is an industrial by-product generated during the steelmaking process, accounting for approximately 15–20% of crude steel production by mass. In 2024, the world produced approximately 1.839 billion tons of crude steel and 300 million tons of steel slag ( Worldsteel, 2025 ). This substantial output underscores the importance of addressing the efficient utilization and management of steel slag. Due to its excellent mechanical properties, including high strength and superior wear resistance, steel slag has been widely employed as an aggregate in road infrastructure and highway construction (Shen et al., 2024 ; Zhao et al., 2024 ).
