Synergistic Waste Heat Utilisation with Advanced Energy Systems towards Optimising Energy Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability in Stone Byproducts, Cement, and Concrete Batching Industries
Abstract
Energy consumption in industries accounts for a significant portion of carbon emissions. In this context, the effective management of byproducts such as stone sludge waste presents both challenges and opportunities. Stone sludge, a byproduct of quarrying and stone processing, often poses disposal challenges due to its high moisture content and environmental impact. However, advancements in energy systems offer innovative solutions for the efficient utilisation of waste heat within cement plants, particularly in the drying and transportation processes of stone sludge. In recent years, the global discourse on sustainable development has propelled industries towards the adoption of innovative energy systems to mitigate environmental impacts and optimise resource utilisation. Within the realm of cement and concrete production, a sector notorious for its significant energy consumption and waste generation, the integration of advanced energy systems has emerged as a promising solution to address both operational efficiency and environmental concerns. The stone industry stands as a vital component of the construction supply chain, providing essential materials for the production of cement and concrete. However, alongside its contributions, the extraction and processing of stone give rise to considerable amounts of sludge waste, characterised by its high moisture content and limited reuse potential. Traditionally, the disposal of such waste has posed significant challenges, ranging from environmental contamination to economic burdens. In conclusion, the convergence of advanced energy systems and waste management techniques holds immense promise for the sustainable development of the cement and concrete production sector. Through the synergistic utilisation of waste heat recovery, combined heat and power, and district heating systems, the effective drying and transportation of stone sludge waste can be achieved while concurrently enhancing energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact. As the industry continues to embrace these innovative solutions, it moves closer towards realising its commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management.
